Rhinebeck ready for Chelsea’s wedding

RHINEBECK – On a typical summer weekend, the Village of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County is crowded with tourists, but this weekend is expected to be especially difficult to maneuver because of the added influx of people expected as a result of the Chelsea Clinton wedding to be held outside the village, at the Astor Courts estate, overlooking the Hudson River.

State and local police told a news conference, Thursday, that there should be minimal problems with traffic over the weekend as officers will be out in force.

Maj. Michael Kopy said they are assisting federal authorities because of the notables who will be there, including of course, Chelsea’s mom and dad, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“We are providing a direct support to the United States Secret Service in conjunction with the visit. We do that as a matter of routine whether it’s here in the Hudson Valley or anywhere in the State of New York. Second, we are providing traffic support in the Village of Rhinebeck in the furtherance of what’s a large event,” he said. “We’re here to insure that the residents of Rhinebeck and the Northern Dutchess County area can enjoy the weekend as best as possible, as well as the merchants.” They are concerned that the traffic does not get so tied up that customers don’t come to their shops.

Today, police will announce specified no-parking areas, and road closures.

The FAA has declared a ‘no fly’ zone around the area to keep the paparazzi helicopters away.
