Teen shot walking home from night school

BAY SHORE – Police are investigating the shooting of a teen, Wednesday night. 

Joel Nieves, 16, of Bay Shore, was shot five times at the corner of Illinois and Nebraska avenues, about 10:30 p.m.  He is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Nieves was walking home from classes at Brentwood High School when he was confronted by two or three teens.  At least one of the assailants fired the five shots, striking the victims in the back.

The suspects are described as Hispanic males, wearing dark clothing and possibly hoodies.  They fled on foot, north on Illinois Avenue toward Candlewood Road..
